Nursing bras can be difficult things to pick out – when exactly should you pick out a nursing bra, anyhow? It is recommended that you pick out a nursing bra during the last few weeks of your pregnancy. It is best if you can pick out your nursing bra after your baby is born, but that is already a busy time and it may be difficult to get yourself and your newborn to the store and into the dressing room to try on nursing bras. If you buy your nursing bra too early, you may end up with a poor fit because your breasts undergo many changes during and after pregnancy.
For breastfeeding mothers, keep in mind that the breast size can fluctuate throughout the day, especially right before and immediately after feeding. For that reason, it’s a good idea to look for a nursing bra with a cup that is flexible enough to accommodate the change in breast size. A seamless nursing bra is especially beneficial, especially if manufactured from stretch cotton or cotton/Lycra fabrics. This fabric combination allows a comfortable fit as well as support for the nursing mother. A seamless nursing bra offers the same advantage as other seamless bras – a smooth bust line.
A nursing bra with easy access to the breast is important. One-hand cup opening is very convenient, especially if you’re holding a baby. A nursing bra allows maximum skin-to-skin contact with the nursing baby and has wide, non-stretch shoulder straps with cushioning to provide maximum comfort and flexibility without digging into your shoulders, or causing fatigue.
Breastfeeding moms can expect some staining, so natural fabrics that release stains easily are ideal. It’s a good idea to purchase at least two or three nursing bras, so you can wear a clean, fresh bra every day. You may also find that you feel more comfortable wearing a nursing bra even to bed to support your breasts throughout the time you are nursing.
Bras that fasten in front are not recommended for nursing women. Most of these have snap closures that provide only a narrow band to keep the bra from completely opening. This bra design provides no support to the breast during breastfeeding.
Fit... fit... fit. We can’t say it enough! Especially when a woman is nursing, fit is essential in order to achieve maximum comfort, convenience and support. Today’s nursing mom has many styles and colors from which to choose, so her taste in lingerie doesn’t have to change, just because she’s a new mom.
