The same rules for purchasing a maternity bra apply as when purchasing other bras. Fit is the most important factor. A poor fitting bra will be uncomfortable and unattractive, not to mention a waste of money. Maternity bras are available in many of the same styles as other bras, including softcup, underwire and even sports bras.
Breasts change in size continually during and after pregnancy. As the pregnancy advances the breasts enlarge and become heavier. You may need to purchase several bras during your pregnancy, as it’s important not to wear one that is too small. Pregnant women need a bra with a maximum number of adjustments that allow for flexibility as breast size increases. Neither is it a good idea to buy a bra that is oversized, in anticipation of filling out the cups as your pregnancy progresses. Your breasts require proper support during this time, even more than usual. If you plan to purchase maternity bra and/or nursing bra, it’s a good idea to wait until later in your pregnancy, when your breasts have filled out in preparation for nursing.
The softcup style maternity bra offers maximum comfort and even more so if they feature a no-roll band that stays in place. This band should also be designed to provide extra support to the bottom of the cup. An underwire maternity bra may offer the maximum support, but be sure to check all four tips of the wire or plastic, to be sure they don’t dig into the breast at any point.
Maternity bras are certainly available in more than just basic white cotton! All types of fabrics and styles can be found today. Breasts are more sensitive during pregnancy, though, so be sure that any decorative touches, like lace, aren’t scratchy against the skin.
