Bras were originally made exclusively from cotton fabrics. Cotton is still widely used in bras today as it provides both stability and comfort for the wearer. Regardless of the bra fabric, if the cups are lined with cotton, it will be very comfortable to wear. The cotton also absorbs moisture so keeps breasts cool in hot weather.
Cotton is a durable fabric, and wears well, but it does wrinkle. And if a cotton bra is washed and then dried in the dryer it is prone to shrink. These are two predominant reasons manufacturers switched to more wearable, more easily wash and wear types of fabrics for bra materials.
Cotton is often used in “training” or first bras for young girls because of their comfort. Bras from cotton help young girls become comfortable wearing this new item of clothing.
